Tithe, offering, pledge or building project — recorded when the money is received, not reconstructed from memory months later.
Mobile money giving flows into the church general ledger with cash and bank giving, so the books are never behind.
Match your M-Pesa statement against church records on screen and investigate differences while they are still fresh.
With your church’s own M-Pesa activated, members give from the app and confirm with the prompt on their phone — no paybill number to copy out.
Each member can review their contribution history at any time — which quietly ends a whole category of disputes.
A decade ago the offering basket told the whole story of a Sunday's giving. Today a large share of tithes and offerings in Kenyan churches never reaches the basket: it arrives by M-Pesa, sometimes days before or after the service, from members in the diaspora, from the shift worker who could not attend, from the young adult who simply does not carry cash.
That is a blessing for generosity and a problem for records. An M-Pesa statement says that two thousand four hundred shillings arrived from a number on Tuesday. It does not say that this was a member's October tithe, or that half of it was meant for the building fund. Without that link, a church cannot issue a giving statement, follow up a pledge, or report honestly on a project's progress.
A paybill number suits most churches. The account field lets givers say what the money is for — a purpose, a project, an envelope number — and statements carry that detail through to your records.
A till (Buy Goods) is simpler and cheaper for a small congregation, but there is no account field, so every payment arrives without a stated purpose attached.
A leader's personal number is convenient and genuinely dangerous. The moment church money mixes with personal money, accountability is gone and that leader is exposed to suspicion they do not deserve. If your church still receives giving this way, moving to a paybill belongs on the next finance committee agenda.
Agree simple conventions for the account field and teach them repeatedly from the front. Keep members' phone numbers on their records so contributions match automatically. Record purpose as money is received rather than later. Reconcile the M-Pesa statement, the bank statement and your own records every month, not every year. And record transaction charges as the real expenses they are, or the books will never agree with the bank.
GlideMission is built around exactly this workflow, and our full practical guide to M-Pesa giving for churches goes through it step by step. To see it with your own paybill and fund structure, request a free demo.
A paybill is strongly recommended because the account field lets givers state a purpose, and statements remain detailed. A till can work for a small congregation. What should be avoided is receiving church giving on an individual's personal number, which removes accountability and exposes that person unfairly.
Contributions are matched using the giver's phone number against the member register, together with the account reference they used. Anything unmatched is listed for a person to assign, so nothing is silently misfiled.
Yes. Fundraising campaigns and projects can each receive giving and pledges, and members can pledge or give toward a specific campaign from the mobile app or by using the campaign's account reference.
Anonymous giving is recorded honestly as anonymous income against the right fund, rather than guessed at. The accounts stay accurate and the member's preference is respected.
They should be, and GlideMission records them as expenses. Charges that go unrecorded are one of the most common reasons a church's books never quite match its bank balance.
